2011 ends on a positive note – capacity, economy loom as issues in 2012

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that full year 2011 passenger demand rose 5.9% compared to 2010, in line with long-term growth trends. In contrast, cargo markets contracted by 0.7% for the year; but recorded positive demand growth in December of 0.2%. Growth in demand lagged capacity increases at 6.3% (passenger) and 4.1% (cargo) putting downward pressure on load factors. The average passenger load factor for 2011 was 78.1%, down from 78.3% in 2010, while the freight load factor was just 45.9%, down from 48.1% in 2010.

IATA establishes a training partnership with Etihad Airways

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) Training and Development Institute and Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, announced a training partnership during the proceedings of the IATA-AACO Aeropolitical Affairs Forum in Abu Dhabi in a joint effort to develop the human capital of the aviation industry in the region. This training partnership will commence with the implementation of the Airline Customer Service program and will extend afterwards to other fields in aviation, cargo, travel & tourism.

Eurozone crisis biggest risk to profits – regional differences widen

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced revisions to its industry outlook. For 2011, profitability remains weak but unchanged at $6.9 billion for a net margin of 1.2%. Looking ahead to 2012, IATA downgraded its central forecast for airline profits from $4.9 billion to $3.5 billion for a net margin of 0.6%.

Innovation in Airline-Airport Cooperation

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for innovation and a renewed agenda of cooperation in the relationship between airports and airlines. “We need a common and forward-looking agenda that builds on past successes and puts innovation at the heart of our common issues. Airports and airlines share a common interest in making aviation safer, more secure, user-friendly, operationally efficient and environmentally responsible. Combined, these are our common license to grow,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

Divergent trends – September passenger traffic rises but freight declines

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced traffic results for September showing diverging trends for cargo and passenger traffic. Passenger traffic was 5.6% higher than the same month last year and stronger than the 4.6% year-on-year growth recorded in August. Air freight on the other hand posted a 2.7% contraction for September compared to September 2010. This is a further deterioration from the 2.4% decline recorded in August.
