Can automated border control transform the traveller’s experience? This whitepaper compares eGates and self-service border kiosks.

Around the world, airports, border agencies and industry decision makers are faced with a major challenge: To evolve and innovate border management amidst increasing passenger traffic and changing government regulations, such as the impending EU Entry Exit System.

With border crossings globally forecasted to reach unprecedented levels, greater flexibility is needed in border control processing to balance safety and security with efficiency. Automated border control technology is an adaptable and effective solution to one of the industry’s most pertinent challenge.

InterVISTAS Consulting was commissioned by Vancouver Airport Authority’s Innovative Travel Solutions team to provide an objective comparison of automated border control solutions, specifically focusing on eGates versus border kiosks and their performance for border control processing and throughput.

The study yielded excellent insights about the benefits of self-service border kiosks. These results demonstrate that processing times and border officer efficiency can be vastly improved.

Lessons from the study airport can be applied to different border authorities around the world that may be transitioning from a combination of eGates and traditional processing to a mix of channels appropriate for different streams of travellers.

For those locations with only traditional processing and no border automation implemented, the deployment of self-service kiosks provides an effective solution to minimise space used, incur the lowest cost of investment in assets and achieve a low total cost of ownership all while reducing border wait times.

As automated border control solutions continue to gain momentum, making an informed decision has never been more important in evolving with the changing needs and pace of tomorrow’s traveller.
