Terminal 3 Modernisation Program
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 opened in 1979. In an effort to improve passenger experience and create a world-class facility, in 2015 work began on the modernisation of Terminal 3. The project consists of three distinct components to minimise impacts to the travelers.
The first component completed in December 2016 consisted of a new, consolidated security checkpoint to reduce wait times and get travellers to their gates faster; overhauled HVAC systems and vertical circulation systems; new finishes in the interior and exterior; additional airline ticket counters; and more baggage handling capacity.
During the second component, the south concourse will be razed. A new 15-gate concourse will replace the structure and be configured in a linear fashion. Additional gates built at this concourse will enable the closure of Terminal 2 to airline operations. Major improvements in this area will include new food and retail concessions, large airline hold rooms, and new customer amenities. This component is anticipated to be completed in late 2018/2019.
The final component of the project will provide an upgraded customer experience for passengers using the north concourse, including food and beverage opportunities and enhanced customer amenities with new interior and exterior finishes. This will be completed in 2020.
There are several unique features to this project. First, design and construction teams utilised the existing terminal and campus for the project. This facility provided many opportunities to create identity and to showcase the airport and its surroundings. Phoenix Sky Harbor is distinctive in that it is located in central Phoenix. This project encompasses that feature and has transformed the passenger experience by opening up the terminal. An abundance of natural light is throughout the terminal and travellers have the opportunity to see sweeping views of the desert landscape as well as the city skyline – something that many airports do not have. The terminal is already changing the way passengers travel. It’s new, modern look is inviting; its consolidated security checkpoint makes the terminal more efficient, and travellers have already noticed praising the changes and the updates.
