Located approximately 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, near the border of Kandal and Takeo provinces, Techo International Airport (KTI) spans an enormous 2,600 hectare site. The design, crafted by the renowned British architectural firm Foster + Partners, draws inspiration from Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and architecture.

The terminal features an aerofoil-shaped roof canopy, supported by ‘structural trees’, which allow natural light to enter the space, creating a sense of openness and calm. This canopy not only serves as a visual centrepiece but also contributes to the airport’s sustainability goals by reducing the need for artificial lighting and enhancing energy efficiency.

The overall masterplan includes provisions for a new airport city, integrating commercial, residential and recreational spaces to create a vibrant hub that extends beyond the traditional airport environment. The construction, which began in 2018, and commenced operations on September 9, 2025, replacing the old Phnom Penh International Airport. The official inauguration ceremony, presided over by the Prime Minister of Cambodia, will be held on October 20, 2025.

Sustainability integrated into every aspect

Techo International Airport is designed to be one of the most sustainable airports in the world. The terminal will be powered by an on-site photovoltaic solar farm, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and operational costs. Inside, passengers will encounter lush greenery, including trees rising through the central void. These elements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also improve air quality and passenger wellbeing.

The airport’s commitment to sustainability extends to its construction materials and waste management practices, ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into every aspect of its development. This holistic approach positions Techo International Airport as a model for future airport design, demonstrating that large-scale infrastructure projects can be both functional and environmentally responsible.

Phased expansion plan

Initially, the airport will handle up to 13 million passengers annually, with plans to expand to 50 million by 2050. The facility is classified as a 4F category airport, capable of accommodating large, long-haul aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. This capacity expansion is crucial for the airport to position itself as a key player in regional and global aviation.

The phased expansion plan includes the development of additional terminals, runways and support infrastructure to meet the growing demand for air travel. Each phase is designed to be scalable and adaptable, ensuring that the airport can evolve in response to changing aviation trends and passenger needs.

The new airport is expected to significantly boost Cambodia’s connectivity and economic growth, particularly in the tourism and trade sectors. Experts estimate that the airport and its surrounding projects will contribute up to 5% to Cambodia’s GDP growth annually in the years following its opening.

Additionally, the development of the airport is anticipated to create thousands of jobs during both the construction and operational phases, providing a significant boost to the local economy and workforce.

Leveraging international expertise

The Techo International Airport project is a $1.5 billion investment led by the Cambodia Airport Investment Co. (CAIC), a joint venture between the Cambodian government and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC).

The airport’s operations will be managed by Cambodia Airports, a subsidiary of the French company VINCI Airports, which has been selected to operate the new facility.

This partnership aims to leverage international expertise to enhance airport services and attract new airlines, thereby expanding Cambodia’s global connectivity. The transition plan includes comprehensive training programmes for local staff, the implementation of advanced technology systems, and the establishment of robust safety and security protocols to ensure a seamless operational handover.

Techo International Airport is more than just a transportation hub; it is a testament to Cambodia’s aspirations and a symbol of its progress. With its sustainable design, cultural resonance and strategic importance, the airport is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of aviation in Southeast Asia. As the country prepares to bid farewell to Phnom Penh International Airport, Techo International Airport stands ready to welcome the world to Cambodia’s vibrant future.
