Oslo Airport is the second busiest airport in the Nordic region and aspiring to be among the top ten in Europe.
Due to anticipated growth, Oslo Airport had to consider its strategy surrounding future expansion. This was to help it accommodate 28 million passengers annually (potentially 35 million), culminating with the Terminal 2 (T2) development.
The airport had to define a baggage handling system (BHS) that could increase capacity and offer built-in redundancy. Oslo continually looks to the most innovative technology to overcome its challenges, stretching back to 1994 when it first partnered with Vanderlande.
The design of the new terminal was altered in close cooperation with Vanderlande and the airport’s team of architects. This resulted in a system that was a more seamless fit and maximised the existing space.
Vanderlande proposed an integrated solution comprising hardware, software and life-cycle services, completed in two phases. T2 also includes an extension to Terminal 1 (T1), which now connects both terminals.
To ensure that Oslo benefited from a ‘pull’ system, Vanderlande installed BAGSTORE, with 1,500 storage locations. HELIXORTER tilt-tray sorters and TUBTRAX were also introduced. In addition, Oslo Airport utilises a dedicated out-of-gauge system.
The solution has delivered a number of benefits to Oslo. Phase 1 of the T2 project has increased capacity from 21 to 28 million passengers and will rise to over 35 million a year. One of the key advantages is the in-built redundancy of the new system.
