Malta International Airport (MLA) has officially launched its East Expansion project, a major infrastructure development that will deliver a new 6,000 square metre terminal building by 2028. The new facility will be physically connected to the existing terminal, creating a seamless experience for departing passengers while strengthening the airport’s ability to manage future traffic growth.
The announcement was made at a press conference by Malta International Airport chief executive officer Alan Borg, alongside Prime Minister Robert Abela. The project represents the largest investment undertaken by the airport since its privatisation and forms a central part of the company’s €345 million investment programme announced in 2025.
According to Mr Borg, the East Expansion will significantly enhance the departure experience, particularly during peak summer periods when the airport handles up to 2,500 departing passengers per hour. The additional space will allow for upgraded facilities, improved passenger flows and a smoother journey through the terminal.
The new departures area will feature five departure gates and a dedicated crew gate, supported by approximately 1,000 square metres of circulation space and a range of seating options designed to improve comfort and efficiency. The development will also introduce 32 new check in desks, an additional 1,300 square metres of circulation space and expanded baggage sorting capacity through a new baggage handling system.
Environmental sustainability has been embedded into the design from the outset. The building will make extensive use of glass and high performance glazing to maximise natural daylight while reducing energy demand. Double and triple height spaces will enhance wayfinding and openness, while photovoltaic panels and landscaped green areas with drought tolerant planting will support clean energy generation and climate resilience.
Prime Minister Abela described the project as a strategic investment aligned with Malta Vision 2050, highlighting its role in strengthening connectivity, improving efficiency and supporting value led tourism. The East Expansion is expected to leave departing passengers with a strong final impression of Malta’s identity and long term ambitions.
