Edinburgh Airport lifts 100ml liquids rule after major security upgrade with new scanning technology

The 100ml liquids rule, in place since 2006, has officially been lifted at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) after the introduction of advanced X-ray security technology. Passengers can now leave liquids in their bags at security, with individual containers of up to two litres permitted.

This milestone makes Edinburgh Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, the first in Scotland to remove the restriction. The change follows the installation of eight new security X-rays as part of a £24 million investment to improve and streamline the passenger experience at Scotland’s busiest airport.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “This is a big day for our passengers and the airport team – we are delighted to be able to lift this rule and really transform the whole security process, making it easier for everyone.

A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006.

The change allows more flexibility for passengers to take liquids through security, all while maintaining and improving our high safety levels through the use of 3D technology. But it is important that passengers continue to check with the situation at their return airport as not all airports will be moving away from 100ml just yet.”

As part of the upgrade, the airport has expanded to eight security lanes, using cutting-edge equipment. The new system allows both liquids and large electronics such as tablets and laptops to remain inside hand luggage during screening.

There is no longer a limit on the total volume of liquids a passenger may carry, provided each item does not exceed two litres.

However, the airport reminds travellers that this relaxation may not be reflected at their return airports, as rules vary across the UK and internationally. Passengers should always check requirements before flying.
