Clarity and simplicity

Latest issue / 7 February 2012 /

As the SESAR initiative continues to garner debate from all corners of the aviation industry, Mark Glover from International Airport Review spoke to one of the key players involved with the initiative, Guenter Martis, Director of European Affairs at CANSO, to see what needs to be done by all involved to push the project forward.

Mark Glover: What do stakeholders need to do in 2012 to build momentum for SESAR?

Guenter Martis: They have to work together and need to come out of their corners where they have been sitting very comfortably, now it is time to commit fully to this project. We all need to work together with the European Commission to get this very important project done. We need to work on the communication of the Commission and we need to achieve a single industry voice, otherwise it will fail. (more…)

The CANSO Congress

Issue 6 2011 / 8 December 2011 /

By 2026, it is forecast that aviation will contribute one trillion USD to the world’s GDP per year. This is more than double the 425 billion USD it contributes today, and clearly demonstrates the increasingly important role that aviation plays in supporting the global economy. However, this relies on the provision of a safe, efficient and cost effective Air Traffic Management (ATM) system that is capable of serving increasing growth.

Air navigation service providers (ANSPs), together with their airline and airport partners, are an integral part of the global aviation system. They are responsible for ensuring that the future ATM system is fit for purpose, while at the same time, meeting market demand and continuing to provide a safe, efficient and cost effective service to their customers – the airspace users.

This is not an easy task. Airspace is a finite resource and there are only so many aircraft that can safely fly through the same section of sky at any one time. ANSPs also face a myriad of political, technical and human resources challenges that can, at times, stand in the way of progress. (more…)

The Single European Sky – “Just do it!”

Issue 2 2011 / 11 April 2011 /

The agreement of European Union Member States on the Single European Sky (SES) marked a political solution to an inefficient and expensive European Air Transport System. Officially launched in March 2004, SES aims towards ambitious goals: cutting the cost of flying by half, decreasing by 10% the environmental impact of aviation, and enabling a three-fold increase in capacity, all the while further improving the already high safety record of European airspace.

This first SES package initiated a huge change in thinking and acting on aviation matters in Europe. The framework regulation, the airspace regulation, the service provision regulation and the interoperability regulation built the foundations for a new European Air Traffic Management that could meet future capacity and safety needs by reducing fragmentation. As the EC Commissioner Loyola de Palacio stated: “from patchwork to network.” (more…)
