The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will introduce its modernised TSA ConfirmID programme from 1 February 2026, providing airline travellers without a REAL ID or other acceptable identification a new option to access air travel in the United States.

Under the scheme, passengers who arrive at an airport security checkpoint without a REAL ID or another approved form of identification will be able to use TSA ConfirmID for a fee of $45. The optional service offers an alternative identity verification process for travellers who still wish to fly.

Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator for TSA Adam Stahl said: “TSA ConfirmID will be an option for travellers who do not bring a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID to the TSA checkpoint and still want to fly. Impacted travellers will have the option to pay $45 and use the TSA ConfirmID process. This fee ensures that non-compliant travellers, not taxpayers, cover the cost of processing travellers without acceptable IDs. To avoid delays or missed flights, all travellers should obtain a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification before heading to the airport.”

TSA is urging all airline passengers to take steps in advance of any flight departing on or after 1 February. Travellers are advised to check that they have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification such as a passport before arriving at the airport.

Passengers without acceptable identification will need to visit the TSA ConfirmID webpage prior to travel to pay the $45 fee. A payment receipt will be sent by email and must be presented at the airport, either printed or displayed on a mobile device, alongside any government issued identification. TSA officers will then guide travellers through the ConfirmID process at the checkpoint.

All passengers using TSA ConfirmID will be subject to additional identity verification and screening measures, which may result in longer processing times. TSA has warned that the ConfirmID process can take up to 30 minutes and that travellers who arrive without acceptable identification and without having paid the fee in advance could face significant delays or missed flights.

TSA has emphasised that travellers who already hold a REAL ID or another approved form of identification do not need to use TSA ConfirmID. A full list of acceptable identification documents is available on the TSA website, and passengers unsure of their compliance status are encouraged to consult their state Department of Motor Vehicles.
