A new chapter in North Texas aviation began as McKinney National Airport (TKI) broke ground on a new commercial passenger terminal. After over 40 years serving general aviation, the airport is moving toward offering commercial airline service, with operations expected to begin by late 2026. This development supports the region’s growing population and business investment.
City of McKinney representatives were joined at the event by elected officials and leaders from economic development, business and tourism sectors. Their collaboration and funding efforts will help establish TKI as the third commercial airport in North Texas.
The groundbreaking featured local dignitaries marking the occasion with a ceremonial dirt drop, symbolising the airport’s transition into a modern commercial gateway. Senator Ted Cruz said, “Congratulations to the City of McKinney, Texas, on breaking ground on the new McKinney National Airport passenger terminal. I was proud to work with the city while drafting the FAA Reauthorization Act and to provide support to help launch this project. This is a major milestone that will bring jobs and promote economic growth in North Texas. I look forward to seeing it completed.”
Dallas-based architect Corgan has designed a modern and accessible terminal. Key features include a 46,000-square-foot building with four gates, expandable to six; centralised food and beverage areas; spacious hold rooms; an aircraft ramp for four commercial aircraft, with capacity for six; and new Taxiway C to improve airfield operations. The site also includes a 980-space public parking lot, onsite car rentals, a deicing area, and essential infrastructure.
The terminal is expected to serve 200,000 passengers annually, with expansion capability for over one million. Mayor Bill Cox noted, “This new terminal is not just an investment in McKinney, it’s an investment in the future of North Texas. This project fulfils a long-standing vision of the City Council to create a future-ready airport that strengthens mobility, supports economic development, and makes travel more accessible.”
Airport Director Ken Carley, A.A.E., said, “Today is a very good day for McKinney National Airport as we officially begin the transition from a successful general aviation operation to a commercial service airport,” adding, “Our travelling community will soon have a modern and efficient gateway, saving them time, money, and hassle.”
Contracting firms Garver and Swinerton will construct the terminal, aircraft parking, and public facilities. Funding for the $79 million project comes from city and state sources, including sales tax revenue bonds, a transportation grant, and reinvestment zone contributions.
