London Luton Airport invests in sustainable fleet to reduce emissions and achieve Net Zero by 2040

London Luton Airport is progressing towards its Net Zero goal by 2040 with a multi-million-pound investment in sustainable vehicles. This initiative will reduce airport emissions by nearly 15% starting this year.

London Luton Airport (LLA) has made significant progress towards its goal of reaching Net Zero emissions by 2040, with a multi-million-pound investment in a new fleet of sustainable car park transfer buses and operational vehicles.

David Vazquez, Head of Sustainability at London Luton Airport, commented: “As part of our commitment to Net Zero, we have set targets to implement a 100% low-carbon fleet by 2030. From the end of this year, this latest transition, will reduce our airport emissions* by nearly 15%, playing an important role in our plans for responsible growth. 

“All aspects of our sustainability strategy are underpinned by collaboration and I’m grateful to teams across the business, who work so hard to embed better environmental and social practices into their daily roles and responsibilities.”

LLA’s trajectory to Net Zero focuses on six key areas that will see the airport working with partners and the wider industry to implement various decarbonisation initiatives.

What are the six key areas that will see LLA achieve Net Zero?

  • Renewables- Over 60% of LLA’s emissions come from electricity consumption. To reduce this LLA will generate 25% of electricity from on-site renewable sources by the end of 2026, and continue to explore the feasibility of increasing on and off-site generation to 50%.
  • Airport Operations Vehicles- LLA’s airport operations vehicles make up 15% of its emissions, to reduce this LLA is working towards 100% low carbon vehicles by 2030.
  • Heating- Gas makes up 20% of LLA’s emissions, to reduce this it will transition to low-carbon heat from 2030 and phase out gas by 2039.
  • Energy Efficiency- To reduce emissions from LLA’s existing operations as far as possible, the airport will use 100% LED lighting and optimise the building management systems and boiler efficiency.
  • Generators- To reduce carbon in the short-term, LLA will explore the use of Low-Carbon Fuel.
  • Residual Emissions- To tackle other airport emissions where there is currently no zero emission solutions available, LLA will work with the wider industry to develop solutions to help others.
