Denver International Airport (DEN) has been named the number one Green Fleet of 2025 by the NAFA Fleet Management Association for its work in reducing environmental impacts and promoting sustainability across fleet operations. DEN competed with 59 agencies nationwide, covering both government and commercial fleets. This is the first time DEN has received top honours for its green fleet.

“Being named the greenest fleet in North America is a significant accomplishment for DEN, especially as one of the largest airports in the world,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “This milestone reflects DEN’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, invest in clean technologies and lead the aviation industry toward a more sustainable future. We remain focused on setting new standards for sustainability while maintaining operational excellence.”

For the past 18 years, the NAFA Fleet Management Association has presented the Green Fleet Awards to organisations that deliver innovative and effective green programmes. Judges recognised the airport’s use of alternative fuels and vehicles, efficient management of fuelling and recharging facilities, and commitment to workforce development within the local community.

Key achievements contributing to DEN’s award include:

  • Expanding its electric vehicle (EV) fleet by 49 per cent compared with 2024, within a total fleet of 770 units. Ongoing orders are expected to result in overall fleet growth of 103 per cent.

  • Conducting side-by-side comparisons of petrol, compressed natural gas and EVs. Findings showed EVs cost 96 per cent less to operate and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 55 per cent per vehicle compared with CNG.

  • Installing 14 additional Level 2 charging stations and two solar powered Level 2 chargers, increasing charging capacity by 52 per cent over 2024. Construction is also under way for a dedicated charging plaza.
