ERA warns US–EU trade dispute and tariffs from Trump could severely impact Europe’s regional aviation connectivity and economy

ERA urges urgent resolution to avoid tariffs that risk higher airline costs, reduced services, and weakened regional connectivity across Europe.

The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) has issued a warning that rising trade tensions between the US and EU could seriously undermine regional aviation connectivity across Europe. This follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a proposed 30% tariff on all EU imports, due to take effect on 1 August.
Aviation tariffs risk higher costs and reduced connectivity across Europe, warns regional airline association
ERA is particularly concerned about the aviation sector’s exposure, as aircraft and related components are expected to be among the main categories impacted by EU countermeasures. The proposed list of US goods subject to tariffs is valued at €72 billion, underlining the scale of the economic risk.
Although the EU has expressed a desire for a negotiated solution and paused countermeasures affecting €21 billion of US goods as a goodwill gesture, uncertainty remains. ERA stresses that no side wins in a trade dispute that threatens both connectivity and economic stability.
This comes at a time when Europe’s air connectivity remains below pre-pandemic levels. The continent’s 12 largest domestic markets are still operating with 1.5 million fewer flights than before COVID-19. Despite a forecasted 7% rise in 2025, overall connectivity is projected to stay 9% lower than in 2019.
“Regional airlines connect communities with few alternatives. If these tariffs go ahead, airlines will face higher costs that could lead to fare increases, reduced services or withdrawn routes,” said ERA Director General Montserrat Barriga. “This puts essential mobility, local economies and social cohesion at risk. Aviation is a global, co-operative industry. Trade barriers must not jeopardise access and resilience in Europe’s regions.”
ERA is calling on policymakers to reach a constructive solution and ensure aviation items are excluded from tariff measures. As the European Commission and Member States continue talks with the US, safeguarding regional air services must be a key concern.
