Belfast International Airport (BFS), part of the VINCI Airports network, has officially opened the first phase of its £100 million, five-year investment programme with a new terminal extension. The launch was marked by an event attended by First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, alongside VINCI executives Pierre Anjolras and Nicolas Notebaert.
Details on Belfast Airport’s new extension
This initial £25 million phase includes a state-of-the-art security hall equipped with Next Generation Security Equipment, allowing passengers to leave liquids and electronics in their hand luggage, ensuring a faster, smoother journey. The redesigned security area features a spacious layout for a more relaxed experience.
A key highlight is the 1,600 sqm Duty-Free store delivered in partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail. It brings together Duty-Free shopping, food and beverage outlets, and travel essentials under one roof. For the first time, passengers can enjoy a mix of global brands and local favourites in one immersive space.
Improvements have also been made to the Arrivals experience, including a new external forecourt area. Further upgrades across the terminal are ongoing, enhancing food and beverage options and other passenger facilities.
Since VINCI Airports’ investment in 2018, Belfast International has continued to grow, expecting another record year in 2025. The airport supports over 4,000 jobs and plays a vital role in Northern Ireland’s aviation, tourism, and economic sectors.
Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of Concessions at VINCI and President of VINCI Airports, said:
“This first delivery of VINCI Airports’ investment programme to modernise Belfast International airport improves the passenger experience with state-of-the-art security features and high-quality retail offer. As the airport plays a pivotal role for aviation, tourism and local economy, VINCI Airports is committed to boosting connectivity and sustainable growth for Northern Ireland.”
