London Luton Airport records 13m passengers in last 12 months

Passenger numbers at London Luton Airport increased 17 percent in April 2016 pushing the annual figure to over 13 million.

The latest passenger figures have revealed over 1.1 million people flew via London Luton Airport in April equating to a 17 percent increase compared with the same month last year. April also marked 25 consecutive months of passenger growth at the airport.

The monthly increase pushes up London Luton’s passenger numbers to over 13 million in the past 12 months.

LLA is addressing this increased demand by investing £110million to transform the airport. Contractors are already on site redeveloping the terminal building to increase annual capacity from 12 million to 18 million passengers by 2020.

In order to cater for demand, the airport announced it would build a £200 million mass passenger transit (MPT) link to connect the rail station with the terminal. The link will replace the existing shuttle bus and cut journey times from St Pancras to less than 30 minutes.

April also saw the launch of three new routes at the airport. Blue Air has begun flights to the historic cities of Larnaca (Cyprus) and Turin (Italy). London Luton has also become the first English airport to offer a service to Paris Orly with Transavia.
