Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4 was evacuated as a precaution following calls to a 'possible hazardous materials incident'.

A 57-year old man remains in police custody and an investigation is ongoing, following an incident that led to the partial evacuation of London Heathrow Airport.

Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4 was evacuated as a precaution on Monday, 8th September, at approximately 17:00 BST.

London Fire Brigade was called to a “possible hazardous materials incident,” but later stood down its response. Police have since confirmed that no hazardous material was found.

A can of what is thought to be CS spray was located at the terminal, the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement. Reports suggest around 20 people were treated for “irritation” caused by the spray, by the London Ambulance Service. All 20 were later discharged.

The terminal was closed for around three hours, with Heathrow confirming that it reopened to passengers shortly after 20:00 BST. The airport has apologised for the disruption, adding that safety is always their highest priority.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of CS gas and causing a public nuisance.

Scotland Yard have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism related.
