174 organisations urge the government to support Gatwick’s £2.2 billion northern runway expansion plans

A coalition of 174 organisations, representing over 104,875 businesses, has called on the Government to back London Gatwick’s (LGW) Northern Runway proposal.

In separate letters, the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the Gatwick Diamond Initiative, representing their members and stakeholders, urged Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to endorse the airport’s expansion plans.

They emphasise how the proposal to bring LGW’s Northern Runway into regular operation aligns with Labour’s goals of fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and driving prosperity.

Details of the Northern Runway

The Northern Runway, currently a backup, could be made operational as a second permanent runway. The project represents a £2.2 billion shovel-ready privately financed investment which could be operational by the end of the decade.  

The Planning Inspectorate has delivered its recommendation with the Government due to make a decision early next year. If approved, the Northern Runway plan will create a further 14,000 jobs and generate £1 billion in economic benefits every year.
