At the Routes Asia 2023 conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand, International Airport Review caught up with Martin Langaas, Director Traffic Development & Cargo at Avinor.
In this exclusive video interview with International Airport Review, Martin discussed the recovery of the Avinor airport network, which is said to be going well due to Avinor’s extensive domestic network, international traffic is taking longer to recover but they are optimistic coming into 2023. Challenges are largely economical such as challenges of airlines, lack of availability of aircraft, maintenance taking a longer time, ground handling issues.
A lot of Avinor‘s airline customers held quite an optimistic view of Norway for 2023, but they have had to adjust their outlook due to the uncertainty of the industry. They have reportedly seen tremendous growth in Arctic tourism especially in the north of Norway, which airlines respond very well to as they have a lot of availability in the winter and the yields are very good.
Norway is the biggest cargo market in Northern Europe due to the extensive seafood exports from the country, so there are many freighters supporting that demand but they want to see a shift to more belly capacity. The reopening of China is very important for Avinor as pre-pandemic they had three weekly flights to China.
