Bridgestone Corporation has partnered with Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Airports at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) to implement co-creation activities aimed at reducing foreign object debris (FOD) on airport surfaces, enhancing aircraft safety and operational efficiency. This is the first continuous collaboration involving both an airline and an airport for FOD management.
FOD previously caused tire-related issues at Bole International Airport, affecting flight schedules and highlighting the need for improved operational safety. Bridgestone applied its expertise in tire inspection and FOD analysis to identify problem areas and propose solutions tailored to the airport. Measures included hazard mapping, recommendations for efficient debris collection, data-driven patrol support, and staff awareness activities.
Since implementing the initiative, the incidence of aircraft tire issues caused by FOD has dropped significantly, improving on-time performance and overall operational safety. The programme has also promoted sustainability by increasing the use of retreaded tires, extending tire life and enhancing the economic and environmental value of aviation operations.
Retta Melaku, COO of Ethiopian Airlines, said: “Safety of our passengers, employees, and aircraft is a priority. We are pleased to collaborate with Bridgestone to strengthen FOD reduction at our hub airport.”
Getaneh Adera, Managing Director of Ethiopian Airports, added: “This achievement reflects our commitment to safe operations and close collaboration with Bridgestone, enhancing productivity and economic value.”
Jean-Philippe Minet, Managing Director of Bridgestone Aircraft Tire (Europe) S.A., emphasised the role of co-creation in delivering customised solutions, stating: “By combining operational insights with our technology, we contribute to safe aircraft operations and improved productivity.”
The initiative aligns with Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment, focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and continuous innovation, and demonstrates how strategic collaboration can improve safety, performance, and environmental outcomes in aviation.
