Mariscal Sucre International Airport has unveiled a significant expansion project, increasing passenger capacity and introducing sustainable design features to support Ecuadorās long-term air connectivity.

This week’s picture of the week comes from Corporación Quiport who has announced the completion of a major expansion at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, marking one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades in Ecuadorās recent aviation history. The project, which resumed in 2024 after a pandemic-related pause, represents an investment of USD 74.2 million and is designed to increase the airportās annual capacity from 5 million to more than 7 million passengers.
The development adds 17,647 m² to the terminal and expands the apron by 35,000 m², creating new operational, commercial and service areas. Key improvements include additional space for international arrivals and departures, expanded check-in facilities, a new pre-boarding lounge for 350 passengers, and extra aircraft parking positions. Provision has also been made for future expansion of the International VIP Lounge.

Construction was carried out by Ecuadorian firm Ekron alongside multiple contractors, generating more than 500 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs over 17 months of continuous work. The project achieved EDGE certification for sustainable building practices, making it the first airport development in Ecuador to receive this recognition for energy, water and carbon efficiency.
Safety was a central focus throughout the construction phase, which was completed without serious incidents thanks to strict occupational health and safety protocols. Bringing the new facilities into operation required close coordination with airlines, ground handlers, security authorities and the wider airport community.
Corporación Quiport acknowledged the support of its shareholders in delivering the project, highlighting their role in strengthening Ecuadorās strategic infrastructure. The expansion is seen as a signal of confidence in the countryās aviation sector and its capacity for growth.
The upgraded facilities position Quito Airport to meet rising demand while improving passenger experience and operational resilience. Quiport reaffirmed its commitment to service excellence and sustainable development at Ecuadorās primary gateway.
