Denver International Airport (DEN) has announced it will conduct a feasibility study into the potential use of a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) on airport grounds, aiming to support its ambition to become the greenest airport in the world and achieve energy independence.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston highlighted the city’s bold approach to sustainability. “Denver leads with bold ideas, and our vision for the future of our airport is no exception,” he said. “Studying the potential of small modular nuclear reactors is a forward-looking step in understanding how we can deliver reliable, clean energy at scale. This is about thoughtful planning, long-term sustainability, and our commitment to a healthier planet for generations to come.”

SMRs are gaining attention for their potential to generate clean, reliable energy around the clock and to complement intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind. Proponents argue that SMRs could help meet increasing energy demands while reducing carbon emissions.

DEN CEO Phil Washington noted the importance of future-proofing the airport’s energy supply. “We will need a sustainable power supply to meet the demands of airport assets, as well as our safety and customer experience goals. We must plan now and explore all possible options so that we are prepared for the future,” he said.

Washington also pointed to DEN’s past and ongoing sustainability efforts, including solar arrays across 100 acres, the state’s largest Energy Performance Contract, increased use of electric vehicles, and achieving LEED Gold and Platinum certification for new projects.

The $1.25 million feasibility study, expected to take six to twelve months, will explore key issues such as the viability of SMR technology for DEN’s long-term needs, the types of SMR technology available, estimated costs, funding options, regulatory requirements, and potential risks.

Elizabeth Babcock, Executive Director of Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency (CASR), welcomed the study as part of a broader assessment of clean energy solutions. “As we plan for a growing population and a changing climate, we must carefully assess all zero-emission options that can deliver reliable power, while weighing potential costs and environmental impacts to ensure a sustainable future,” she said.

DEN expects to handle more than 120 million passengers annually by 2045, and this study is intended to ensure its energy strategy can support that growth sustainably.
