Los Angeles World Airports has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, showcasing achievements in energy, water, emissions and community initiatives at LAX and Van Nuys.

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has released its Annual Sustainability Report for Calendar Year 2024, providing an overview of progress at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The report highlights initiatives and achievements in areas such as energy use, water management and air quality.
“LAX and Van Nuys Airport are recognised leaders in aviation sustainability due to deliberate decisions aimed at constructing airports that serve their respective communities effectively and remain resilient for future generations,” said Crystal Lee, Deputy Executive Director of Sustainability, Energy, Environmental and Development Services, Los Angeles World Airports. “We work with our project delivery teams, aviation industry partners, and local community to achieve our sustainability and environmental goals and initiatives in alignment with Mayor Karen Bass’s vision for a greener Los Angeles. This report demonstrates our ongoing progress and commitment to visibility as we address key environmental challenges.”
The 2024 report tracks progress towards goals adopted in 2019 under LAWA’s “Boldly Moving to Zero” initiative. These targets include eliminating the use of non-renewable energy, achieving zero carbon emissions from LAWA-owned infrastructure, and ending the use of potable water for non-potable purposes.
Among the achievements noted for 2024 are:
Electrifying 67 per cent of LAWA’s sedan fleet at LAX and VNY
Meeting the 2031 target for reducing ground support equipment emissions at LAX seven years ahead of schedule
Diverting 48 per cent more organic waste from concessions and lounges at LAX compared with 2023
Removing over 146,000 pounds of non-native plants from the LAX Dunes ecosystem
Achieving LEED Platinum certification for the Automated People Mover’s Maintenance and Storage Facility at LAX
Cutting potable water usage at VNY by 34 per cent since 2017
