San Antonio Airport grant secures $13.3 million in Federal funding for new terminal development

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has been awarded a $13.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program. This critical funding will support Phase 4 of construction for SAT’s transformative terminal expansion.

The grant will directly fund mass excavation, drilled piers, and design assist work related to Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, as well as Baggage Handling Systems (BHS). These essential components are part of the development of SAT’s new terminal—the cornerstone of Elevate SAT, a $2.5 billion expansion and capital improvements programme.

“This federal investment is an important win for San Antonio,” said Erik Walsh. “It strengthens our airport infrastructure, creates local jobs and ensures that SAT will continue to meet the growing needs of our city. The improvements under way at SAT are vital to the future of our region and will benefit generations of travellers.”

The new terminal will feature 17 new domestic and international gates and span over 850,000 square feet, designed to significantly enhance the passenger experience. Once completed, it will support increased air service, improve connectivity, and elevate the airport’s role as a regional economic engine.

The terminal development is expected to generate an estimated 16,000 jobs across a variety of sectors, from skilled trades and engineering to design and customer service. Additionally, the program opens up opportunities for local contractors, subcontractors, and vendors—further stimulating the regional economy. Over its lifecycle, the project is anticipated to have a $2.8 billion economic impact on the San Antonio area.
