Austin-Bergstrom Airport opens first phase of terminal expansion

The terminal and apron expansion is a $350 million project, which became operational on 21 February 2019 with a Delta to Atlanta flight. 

The nine additional gates bring the total number of gates to 34, including increasing international flight gates from two to six. This was crucial to keep up with rising passenger numbers – the original Barbara Jordan Terminal designed to serve 11 million passengers per annum, but in 2018 the airport served 15.8 million passengers. 

Covering an area of nearly 175,000 square feet, the expansion includes 88,359 square feet of concourse space; 52,282 square feet of apron level space for baggage make-up conveyors, additional inbound baggage systems, airline operations space, airport support space, and other related ancillary facilities; 28,205 square feet of mezzanine and platform level space and 5,770 square feet of outdoor east terrace. The paved aircraft area around the terminal will also be expanded by 48 acres to better accommodate larger and more aircraft and offer increased overnight aircraft parking. Interestingly, 20 consulting firms were engaged with a five-person, all woman on-site project delivery team. 

In addition, the project is designed to meet LEED Silver certification for overall energy and environmental sustainability.
