June 2018 saw over a million flights in Europe – 4.1 per cent more than in June 2017. This growth is set to continue, with 12.4 million flights predicted in 2024. Already this year we are seeing far greater delays, particularly en route. In part, this is the result of industrial action and significant weather problems – May 2018, for instance, saw a lot of delays due to convective weather patterns and thunderstorms. However, a significant factor in en-route delays is a lack of capacity, most notably in north west Europe but also more generally across the continent; this year we have seen the number of en-route delays rise sharply in more than 25 area control centres.
