Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is testing self-driving ground power units to cut emissions and improve turnaround times on the apron.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, KLM and NEURA Robotics have begun pioneering trials of autonomous ground power units (GPUs) as part of its drive to create a more sustainable and efficient airside operations. The solution is A.R.C – (Autonomous robot for GPU connecting).

Connecting GPUs to aircraft is traditionally a labour-intensive process. The innovation involves GPUs that can navigate independently across the apron and connect to aircraft without manual intervention. Schiphol says the technology aims to reduce reliance on the the airport workforce, as well as diesel-powered equipment and improve turnaround efficiency, supporting its ambition to achieve zero emissions on the ground by 2030.

The autonomous GPUs are equipped with advanced sensors and navigation systems, enabling them to operate safely in a busy airside environment. According to Schiphol, the solution could significantly cut carbon emissions by replacing traditional diesel units with electric-powered alternatives, while also reducing the need for staff to manually position equipment.

Schiphol’s innovation team is working with technology partners to validate the system’s performance under real-world conditions. The trial will assess operational reliability, safety compliance and integration with existing ground handling processes.

The airport has stated that this initiative forms part of its broader sustainability strategy, which includes electrifying ground support equipment and deploying smart technologies to optimise apron operations.

The recent live demo at Schiphol brought together stakeholders, global partners, airports, airlines, and ground handlers. The response was overwhelmingly positive, validating the business case for scaling up A.R.C and similar technologies. Schiphol is now looking to further develop this technology. Schiphol’s innovation team is inviting global innovators, ecosystem partners, and visionary collaborators to join the next phase of this journey
