Each summer, holidaymakers leave behind 20.9 million tonnes of plastic waste, with inflatables among the most commonly discarded items. From classic lilos (47%) to flamingo rings (31%) and oversized unicorn floats (24%), they remain a holiday essential for 41% of families. Yet over a third (36%) admit to buying them on holiday and using them only once.
In the past year alone, more than half (51%) of holidaymakers purchased a new inflatable, though many are abandoned after just eight days. This totals more than 54.5 million discarded inflatables annually, enough to circle the globe twice if laid end to end.
A survey commissioned by London Luton Airport (LLA) found that top reasons for abandonment include limited suitcase space (27%), punctures (19%), lack of use at home (17%), and the hassle of deflating (12%).
Despite the waste, there is an appetite for change. Sixty-one percent of respondents said they would consider buying pre-loved holiday items. Over a third (36%) have already regifted inflatables to fellow travellers. Additionally, 83% would consider donating them at the end of a trip, with 72% wanting to be more environmentally conscious when travelling.
To address this, London Luton Airport has launched the ‘LLA Lilo Exchange’, a fun and sustainable solution allowing passengers to drop off or pick up free pre-loved inflatables before flying (subject to availability).
Returning holidaymakers can donate used lilos upon arrival back in the UK in exchange for a free Fast Track security pass for a future LLA journey. The ‘Lilo Exchange’ is stocked with everything from rubber rings to inflatable dolphins and crocodiles, providing options for both adults and children.
This initiative is part of the airport’s wider ‘LLA Resort’ summer campaign, offering exclusive retail deals, competitions, giveaways and surprise in-terminal experiences to kick-start passengers’ holidays.
Clare Armstrong, Head of Guest Experience at London Luton Airport, said: “We’re thrilled to launch London Luton Airport’s ‘LLA Lilo Exchange’ this summer – a fun and environmentally responsible way to highlight our simple and friendly passenger experience. As we all know, inflatables are one of the most loved holiday staples to travel with and, contrary to the belief of nearly half (45%) of passengers, deflated inflatables are allowed through airport security. Our Lilo Exchange aims to provide a fun way to encourage people to travel more responsibly by bringing back unwanted inflatables, so that other holidaymakers jetting off from LLA can do the same.”
With 2.5 million people expected to fly from LLA this summer to destinations including Palma de Mallorca, Faro, and Malaga, the Lilo Exchange is another way the airport helps passengers enjoy their trip from the moment they arrive.
