Broome Airport: Where the outback meets the ocean

Broome Airport CEO discusses his international ambitions for the airport, sustainability initiatives and how they are caretakers of the environment and community.

At Routes Asia 2025, Craig Shaw, CEO of “family-owned” Broome International Airport in Australia discusses how his airport has recovered to 108% of 2019 passengers, post-pandemic. As the gateway to the Kimberley region, travellers to Broome can visit the Horizontal Falls, ride camels along 22km of white sands at Cable Beach and experience the Outback meeting the ocean.

We’ve done a lot in terms of solar installations across the airport, which means we have halved electricity grid usage and halved our carbon footprint as a result.”

As the airport is nestled in such an ecologically sensitive region, Craig discussed how they are taking care of their fragile environment and promoting sustainability through the integration of solar and electric technologies to reduce their carbon footprint. Craig says that they have a very good relationship with the local land custodians and have an MoU in place to develop more indigenous employment opportunities for the airport workforce, as well as conveying a sense of place by featuring indigenous artwork.

Despite being a small town of only 15,000 people, the airport is now celebrating its first international flight to Singapore and is hoping to put Broome on the international map within the next 5-10 years.
