Singapore Changi Airport has announced that it has been transformed into a vibrant floral wonderland with its inaugural flower-themed showcase, “A Sunflower Sojourn,” which runs from now until 30 September 2024. This display features over 5,000 sunflowers, spanning more than 10 unique varieties and is spread across 20 locations throughout all four airport terminals. Extending outdoors to Hub & Spoke, it marks the largest sunflower showcase ever held at an airport.
Among the highlights are floral displays at the Departure Halls of Terminals 2 and 3, where visitors can admire towering sunflower topiary sculptures, standing at five and eight metres tall, respectively. The showcase features a range of sunflower varieties, from the classic bright yellow ‘Sunrise’ to the rare red and yellow ‘Florenza’ and the delicate pastel pink ‘Strawberry Blonde.’ These blooms have been meticulously cultivated in Changi Airport’s own plant nursery.
In addition to the visual spectacle, the showcase provides educational insights into the cultural significance, ecological importance, and diverse applications of sunflowers. Visitors can learn about the flower’s historical impact on art and agriculture, highlighting its influence on cultural expressions and practices throughout history. Timed to coincide with the September school holidays and the Mid-Autumn Festival, “A Sunflower Sojourn” is a must-see attraction for families, travellers and flower enthusiasts.
The sunflower has been a symbolic presence at Changi Airport since the opening of the Sunflower Garden at Terminal 2’s departure transit area in 2002.
Mr. Ang Siew Min, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations Development at Changi Airport Group, expressed excitement about the new display, stating, “Our lush gardens at Changi Airport have always been more than just a feature – they are an experience that embodies the warmth and hospitality of our airport. We are thrilled to unveil this vibrant Sunflower Sojourn display, as an extension of the Sunflower Garden to the other parts of the airport.”
