Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has announced that it has officially begun a major expansion project, known as “DFW Forward,” marking its most significant capital investment since its opening in 1974. The nearly $9 billion initiative will involve extensive upgrades to terminals, roadways and airfield infrastructure, aimed at enhancing the travel experience and accommodating increased passenger traffic.
Sean Donohue, Chief Executive Officer of DFW Airport, said: “The incredible upgrades and expansions we have planned across the airport are going to reimagine the customer experience in many ways and provide the needed framework to support more historic growth in air travel to and from North Texas. As we grow closer to serving 100 million passengers each year, it’s time for DFW to enhance our remaining legacy terminal and imagine brand new ones.”
The expansion will feature a complete overhaul of Terminal C, which is set to receive a $3 billion renovation. This includes removing more than 400 view-blocking columns, installing dynamic glass windows and raising the roof. The revamped terminal will also offer updated facilities such as new shops, restaurants, lounge spaces, check-in areas, security checkpoints and restrooms.
In conjunction with Terminal C’s renovation, Terminal A will undergo a similar expansion, adding 115,000 square feet and four new gates. Terminal C will add 140,000 square feet and five new gates. Both terminals will benefit from enhanced amenities, including additional dining and retail options, more seating areas, and upgraded restrooms.
The project will be implemented in phases. Following the initial phase of Terminal C’s reconstruction, the remainder of the terminal will be rebuilt in subsequent phases, with the overall project expected to be completed by 2030. During this time, the terminal will continue to operate in portions that are not under construction.
Additionally, the south parking garage adjacent to Terminal C will be rebuilt to incorporate modern parking management technologies and accommodate increased traffic. The garage entrance will close on 14 September 2024 for demolition, with alternative parking options available in the north and central garages. Travellers are encouraged to book parking online to secure the best rates and check availability.
Amanda Zhang, Vice President of Airport Affairs and Facilities at American Airlines, said: “No different than the synergy between American and DFW that’s fuelled growth for 50 years, the new Capital Improvement programme will continue to set North Texas apart in the future as a connection factory for travellers around the world.”
As DFW Airport embarks on this transformative journey, the extensive upgrades are expected to enhance both passenger experience and operational efficiency, supporting the airport’s continued growth and prominence in global aviation.
