Toronto Pearson commits to reducing airport GHG emissions

Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) has committed to reducing GHG emissions at the airport and has now signed on to the World Economic Forum’s Clean Skies Initiative. This includes showing support for the Clean Skies for Tomorrow Ambition statement, which commits the aviation industry to using 10 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030.

SAF comes from many sources, including municipal waste, agricultural residues and waste lipids. It’s fully compatible with existing aircraft and fuelling infrastructure, but the uptake has been slow due to high costs. This new initiative aims to remove barriers to the use of SAF.

The Clean Skies for Tomorrow Ambition statement was unveiled by the World Economic Forum at the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, also know as COP26.

Earlier this year (2021), Toronto Pearson announced its own commitment to achieve net zero GHG emissions (from assets owned and controlled by the GTAA, also known as scope 1 & 2 GHGs) by 2050 as part of our Environmental Policy.
