Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems has been awarded a USD1.6 million contract to supply and install the air traffic control radio communications system for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). This will be the largest air traffic control radio system in Nigeria.

The contract was awarded by the prime contractor for NAMA, Deo Makro Ltd, following an international competitive tender process. Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems will provide more than 80 VHF radios of both high power (300W) and standard power (50W) output for the flight information regional communications network. This contract is part of NAMA’s “Total VHF Coverage of Nigeria” programme, aimed at providing effective air-ground communications between pilots and Nigeria air traffic control centres.

“The supply and installation of Park Air VHF radios is designed to seamlessly integrate with our existing and planned communications network and Area Control Centre equipment to achieve total VHF coverage of Nigeria for the use by NAMA,” said Udoh Nnamdi Director of Safety Electronic Services at NAMA.

The NAMA main control sites are at Lagos and Kano. The associated en-route remote radio sites are: Sokoto, Maiduguri, Jos, Abuja, Ilorin, Port Harcourt and Wukari. Wukari is a new site being established to help improve the coverage of the south eastern delta region. Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems has completed the initial stages of installation at the first site in Lagos.

“We are pleased to be installing such a major network in Nigeria” said Charles Houseago, managing director of Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems UK. “Our radio technology is already used across Africa providing reliable communications and we look forward to expanding our service.”
