The Board of Directors of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) approved definite plans for the expansion of the current passenger terminal at Bengaluru International Airport and announced the appointment of Mr. GV Krishna Reddy as the Vice Chairman of the BIAL Board and Mr. GV Sanjay Reddy as the company’s Managing Director.

Mr. GV Krishna Reddy is Chairman of GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd (GVKPIL) and has been a pioneer in the infrastructure sector in India, having envisioned landmark projects across power, road and airports. Mr. GV Sanjay Reddy, Vice Chairman, GVKPIL also holds the position of Managing Director, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). He will now spearhead BIAL’s expansion phase that has been put on fast track. Mr. Marcel Hungerbuehler will remain responsible for the day-to-day operation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. GV Krishna Reddy said, “These new appointments are testimony to the GVK long term commitment towards BIAL’s future vision. It is our firm belief that this airport provides us the right mix of opportunities and talent as an enabling factor to grow. We are convinced that with GVK’s experience in infrastructure development and Zurich airport’s operational expertise, this airport will rise to new heights”.

In another significant announcement, the design and layout of the expansion of Terminal 1 was finalized and work on the expansion of the existing Terminal 1 will begin in September this year. When completed, Terminal 1 will be expanded by 70% of the existing building with an additional passenger space of 40,000 square meters. This addition will take the terminal capacity to 17 million passengers per annum, a requirement that will suffice till the year 2015.

Terminal 1 will sport an enhanced and modern design elevation and will be completed 18 months from the commencement of its construction this September. The project has been designed by Global architectural firm HOK. The construction partners for this project will be selected through a competitive bidding. The cost of this expansion is estimated to be around Rs. 600 crores.

In addition, a completely new landscaping concept will take shape beginning from the Trumpet Interchange on NH7, leading all the way up to the terminal building. The renewed landscaping is aimed to reflect the flora of the city giving passengers and visitors an essence of Bangalore city at the airport itself.
