The third busiest airport in the UK, Manchester Airport is owned and operated by the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) who also own Bournemouth, Humberside and East Midlands airports.

Opened in June 1938, it was originally known as Ringway Airport. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the RAF commandeered the airport for military use, aircraft manufacturing and training for paratroopers. Peacetime commercial services resumed in 1946.

By 1952, Manchester Airport had started running services 24 hours a day and was handling up to 163,000 passengers per year. In these first few decades following World War II the airport was the second busiest in the UK after Heathrow.

Transport connections with the airport were greatly improved in 1972 when the M56 motorway connection was opened and in 1993 after the opening of Terminal 2 when a brand new railway station was opened, connecting the airport directly to many towns and cities in the North of England.

Terminal 3 was opened by the Princess of Wales in 1989 and, two years later, proposals for a second runway were set out. This was finally completed in 2001.

Manchester Airport is currently the third busiest airport in the UK and has announced plans for significant further growth.
