Work has begun to extend the main runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
During the first phase of the project, navigational aids for the main runway (Runway 05/23) will be out of service until November 1, 2011 to permit the placement of large quantities of fill for the extension and taxiway construction. During this time, the runway will be available for visual approaches only.
The airport’s secondary runway (Runway 14/32), will remain fully operational during this time.
The construction schedule for this work was developed based on extensive research, consultation and weather analysis, to minimize the risk of impacts on flights from weather conditions such as high winds or low visibility. The work is planned during a time when the risk of weather impacts is reduced. However, unusual weather conditions may occur that could impact flight schedules.
Extending the runway from 8,800 to 10,500 feet will allow the airport to handle larger wide-bodied and heavy aircraft. This will enhance the airport’s position as a key international air cargo and passenger hub.
The project is being jointly funded by Halifax International Airport Authority, the federal government through Transport Canada and the Gateways and Border crossings Fund, and the Province of Nova Scotia.
