This week’s picture of the week comes from Long Beach Airport in California which has been given a $185 million renovation which retains and enhances the airport’s resort-like ambience.
This is the latest phase of its decade-long revitalisation programme, led by Studio One Eleven, aimed at positioning the airport as a world-class yet locally distinctive gateway. The project, which unfolded in three phases—concessions, greeting plaza and historic terminal preservation—has transformed the passenger experience while maintaining the airport’s relaxed character.

The recently completed restoration of the historic terminal focused on revealing the simplicity of its original Streamline Moderne design by removing later additions. Seismic upgrades were incorporated alongside the careful preservation of WPA-era mosaics, ensuring the landmark meets modern safety standards while honouring its legacy.
New design elements complement Long Beach’s coastal identity through the use of similar forms, materials and motifs. The terminal now serves as a central feature, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces via an open-air plaza. This layout creates a smooth transition for passengers and establishes the terminal as a prominent landmark for arrivals and departures.

Every design choice prioritised the traveller experience, from native landscaping and revived historic airfield graphics to furnishings and lighting inspired by aviation heritage. Material selection emphasised durability, sustainability and climate suitability, incorporating warm woods, streamlined metalwork and heat-reducing paving. Outdoor spaces were designed to minimise reliance on air conditioning, while landscaping enhances comfort and reduces environmental impact.
The improvements have redefined the airport experience, making arrivals feel gracious and distinctly Southern Californian. Long Beach Airport now offers a more enjoyable environment for waiting and connection, transforming the terminal into a memorable part of the journey.
