At 0353hrs today (local Hong Kong time), cargo flight UAE9788, departing from Dubai for Hong Kong with four crew members on board, was suspected to have lost control upon landing and veered off the North Runway, crashing through the fence into the sea.

At the time of the runway excursion, a patrol car from Aviation Security Company Limited, carrying two airport security staff, was patrolling the perimeter road outside the runway zone. The aircraft struck the vehicle, causing it to fall into the sea.

The Airport Emergency Centre was activated immediately, and rescue operations began without delay. Fire services rescued the four crew members from the aircraft and brought them to safety. Tragically, the two security staff in the patrol car did not survive. One was certified dead at the scene, and the other was pronounced dead later in hospital.

The North Runway has been closed temporarily. However, the Centre and South Runways remain operational, and overall flight operations are unaffected.

The safety design of the airport’s runway and apron fully complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. According to available information, both weather and operational conditions met safety requirements at the time of landing.

The airport security patrol cars form part of operations around the North Runway and North Perimeter Road, ensuring rapid response in case of incidents. The two staff members involved were performing their duties at a designated observation post, following established procedures. They had served at the airport for seven and twelve years respectively.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and will provide full support. AAHK will cooperate fully with the Civil Aviation Department, Air Accident Investigation Authority, Fire Services Department, and Police in the investigations. Safety assessments will be carried out before deciding when to reopen the North Runway.
