Swedish state-owned airport operator Swedavia is well-versed in the art of snow clearance, given the unforgiving Scandinavian winter climate. And with three million square metres of airside area at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to be cleared during snowfall – including three runways, taxiways, aprons, parking stands and transport routes for other vehicles – clearance can be a full time operation. Just two centimetres of snowfall on the terminal aprons will leave about 1,200 lorry loads of snow to be carried to two snow dumps, which have a combined capacity of 400,000 cubic metres.
