Jim May, President and CEO of the Air Transport Association of America released the following statement on behalf of the ATA Board of Directors…

“An iconic American hero has been lost. Although the tragic accident that took Senator Ted Stevens life deprives the American people of a one of a kind leader, the citizens of Alaska will benefit for decades to come from his lifelong, enduring commitment to them. His body of work, however, went far beyond Alaska. We will remember him as a fearless champion of our national defense, a protector our nation’s fisheries, and a dedicated policy leader in aviation safety.

“He was a dear and close friend, and while greatly missed, will truly remain with us forever.

“We also want to express our sorrow at the loss of our friend William “Bill” Phillips, who counseled the Air Transport Association for many years. Bill was an extraordinary, multi-talented friend of the industry whose expertise, wise counsel, and impeccable character will be missed.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Catherine Stevens and Janet Philips and the Stevens and Phillips families, and join in the prayers for Willy Phillips recovery and that of Sean O’Keefe, his son Kevin, and Jim Morhard from this terrible tragedy.”
