Incheon International Airport has launched a fully automated International Remote Baggage Screening System, becoming the first airport globally to enable cross border checked baggage screening between two sovereign nations. The new system allows baggage for selected U.S. bound flights to be screened remotely by U.S. authorities before aircraft arrival, significantly improving efficiency and passenger experience.

The process applies to passengers departing from or transiting through Terminal 2, where checked baggage is screened by U.S. Customs and Border Protection prior to departure from South Korea. Once cleared, bags are transferred directly to their final destination in the United States, removing the need for passengers to reclaim and recheck baggage at their first U.S. arrival airport.

This development eliminates a long standing bottleneck in international to domestic connections and is expected to reduce connection times by up to 20 minutes. While the system currently operates on the Atlanta route, Incheon plans to expand remote screening to Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Detroit and Salt Lake City.

The remote screening capability is fully integrated into the airport’s advanced baggage handling and automation infrastructure. The system is enabled by screening and digital connectivity technology provided by Smiths Detection, supporting high resolution CT imaging, secure data transmission and compliance with both South Korean and U.S. regulatory requirements.

“The deployment of SecurePort-IRBS-K at Incheon marks a defining moment for the global aviation security industry,” said Sunghoon Eom, Country Manager, South Korea, Smiths Detection. “This is the first time a fully automated, DICOS-based baggage screening workflow has been executed between two sovereign countries. Incheon’s leadership and Smiths Detection’s vision made this milestone possible.”

Cymoril Métivier, Global Digital Portfolio Director, Smiths Detection, added: “IRBS is more than a system – it is a blueprint for the future of aviation. By leveraging advanced digital connectivity, Incheon International Airport Corporation has shown how airports can eliminate friction points and redefine the international passenger experience.”

Operational service began in August 2025 following a multi agency certification process involving aviation, border control and security partners from both countries. The project represents the second phase of a broader multi year roadmap to expand remote screening, reinforcing Incheon International Airport’s position as a global leader in secure, intelligent and seamless international travel.
