Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has completed another major milestone within its long term redevelopment programme following the topping out of the Terminal 4 Modernisation Program.

The milestone marks the completion of substantial structural construction works on the modernised terminal facility.

LAX Terminal 4 redevelopment reaches major construction milestone

Construction crews lifted and installed the final steel beam onto the terminal structure during a ceremonial topping out event attended by executives and project teams from Los Angeles World Airports.

With the structural frame now complete, the project will move into the next construction phase involving installation of internal walls, windows, mechanical systems and air conditioning infrastructure.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the project forms part of the airport’s wider multibillion dollar capital improvement programme aimed at improving the passenger experience ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles World Airports, said the project represents another important step toward delivering upgraded passenger facilities for travellers using Terminal 4.

The Terminal 4 Modernisation Program began in 2018 and includes two major infrastructure projects.

The first phase involved the construction of the Terminal 4.5 Vertical Core, which improved passenger connectivity between Terminals 4 and 5 and linked the facility with the airport’s SkyLink system. That project was completed in 2022.

The current redevelopment phase includes a new terminal entrance, a new south concourse and refurbishment works across connecting corridors within the terminal complex.

According to Los Angeles World Airports, the programme currently supports more than 6,200 jobs, including workers participating in the HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness Program.

The airport stated that the wider redevelopment programme is focused on improving operational efficiency and delivering a more seamless passenger journey across the airport environment.

The milestone also follows the recent launch of a new airport identity programme designed to reflect the culture and creative character of Los Angeles throughout the passenger experience.
