Istanbul New Airport has reached the finals of this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF) awards in Berlin, under the “Future Projects – Infrastructure” category.
Istanbul New Airport has been shortlisted in the “Future Projects – Infrastructure” category in this year’s World Architectural Festival (WAF) held in Berlin from the 16 – 18 November 2016. The winners will be selected and announced during the festival.
The shortlisted airport is currently being built by İGA Airports, the consortium that will also operate the airport for 25 years. The lead design is by Scott Brownrigg with the support of two Turkish offices, Fonksiyon and TAM/Kiklop, for detail design. Their project scope includes architectural planning, aesthetics, operational issues, and buildability.
Commenting on the award shortlist announcement, Yusuf Akçayoğlu, CEO of İGA, said: “We are very proud to be nominated with our Istanbul New Airport project for the prestigious WAF Awards. Istanbul New Airport will warmly welcome acknowledgment for the innovative standards set by its architectural design and engineering. It boasts a unique architectural design that combines contemporary and functional elements, inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Istanbul. The New Airport will make Istanbul one of the major passenger and environmentally friendly hubs in the world with its distinctive architecture.”
Due to open in 2018, the airport will provide flights to more than 350 destinations and have an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year. The centrepiece will be its Terminal 1 construction – the world’s largest airport terminal under one roof.
