Munich Airport reports a strong start to 2015

Figures reveal approximately 8.7 million passengers passed through the airport in the first three months of the year, a new first-quarter record for the airport. Take-offs and landings were slightly lower than the same period in 2014 with an increase of 0.9 percent. Munich Airport has put the decline down to flight cancellations during a four-day strike by Lufthansa pilots in mid-March.  A total of 74,000 tons of airfreight were also registered in the first quarter – a year-on-year increase of about 8 percent.

The increase in passenger numbers has been attributed to gains in international traffic. The strongest growth was seen in the intercontinental segment, where a total of 1.5 million passengers represented an increase of about 7 per cent.  New routes to Houston, Mexico City, Miami, Shanghai and Tehran were met with high demand are thought to have fuelled the increase.

Passenger numbers in the continental segment rose to nearly 5 million, or 2 per cent more than in the first quarter of 2014. On domestic routes, the figures show a slight rise of about 1 per cent to 2.2 million passengers.
