Fraport AG welcomed nearly 5.6 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base in August 2012, an increase of 245,000 passengers compared to August 2011 (up 4.6 percent). FRA achieved a new August monthly record despite the eight-hour-long strike by Lufthansa cabin crew at the end of the month, when Frankfurt had about 28,000 fewer passengers.

Aircraft movements increased by 1.2 percent year-on-year to 42,699 takeoffs and landings in August 2012. The increase would have been 1.8 percent without the strike-related cancellation of 251 flights at FRA. The accumulated maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) in the reporting month also climbed by 1.2 percent year-on-year to about 2.6 million metric tons – the highest figure ever recorded for an August month. Frankfurt Airport’s airfreight volume dropped by 4.1 percent to 165,406 metric tons year-on-year. Once again, this can be attributed to the uncertain development of the world economy.

At Fraport’s five majority-owned airports – Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Antalya (AYT), Burgas (BOJ), Varna (VAR) and Lima (LIM) – the total number of passengers rose by 5.2 percent to about 11.7 million in August 2012. In Peru, LIM served some 1.2 million passengers, a jump of 10.3 percent year-on-year. At AYT on the Turkish Riviera, traffic grew by 4.3 percent to 3.9 million passengers. On the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, BOJ received 687,926 passengers (up 6.6 percent), while VAR registered 315,417 passengers (up 6.0 percent).
