Delnor Construction was awarded a $4.8 million contract for Phase 1 of the Kelowna Air Terminal Expansion Project, part of the Drive to 1.6 million passenger program at Kelowna International Airport (YLW).
“We are pleased to have Delnor Construction begin this project,” says Airport Director Sam Samaddar. “Delnor comes to YLW with significant experience including airport construction at Edmonton International. They will help ensure disruptions to passengers during construction are kept to a minimum.”
Phase 1 of the Kelowna Air Terminal Building Expansion Project consists of an expansion to the north of the terminal to provide a new Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) Primary Inspection area to screen passengers arriving on international flights. It is a one-storey addition filled primarily with a screening hall, public washrooms and an extension to the airside corridor, as well as a mechanical and electrical room. The project will also include the use of geothermal and thermal massing to reduce the airports energy footprint.
Construction will begin this week and is expected to be complete by the fall of 2012.
The total cost for Phase 1 is $7.9 million which also includes replacing the airport life safety systems that are currently at capacity. This includes the emergency power generator and the fire alarm systems. As passenger numbers increase the next phases of the Drive to 1.6 Million Passengers Airport Development Program will commence.
The entire cost of the Drive to 1.6 million passenger program is $50.5 million which is funded through the Airport Improvement Fee. The expansions at YLW are needed for future air service development and to support the current and projected growth of passenger traffic.
