Nashville International Airport completed a new system for screening checked baggage…

Nashville International Airport completed a new system for screening checked baggage. The in-line explosive detection system (EDS) project was constructed from May 2009 through December 2010. The system, partially funded by the Transportation Security Administration, improves the safety and security of the screening process for checked baggage by filtering all baggage through improved explosive screening machines.

“We were pleased to work with TSA on implementing the in-line explosive detection system,” said Raul Regalado, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. “Safety and security are our top priorities, and the new baggage system has not only improved these areas, but also streamlined the process and added to a great Nashville Airports Experience.”

The in-line EDS project also improves customer service by allowing passengers to drop off baggage at the airline ticket counter check-in. The project also increased available space in the ticketing lobby by removing the old screening machines.

The project was constructed by Messer Construction and its disadvantaged business enterprise partners Sunago Builders, CMG Painting, Transolutions and Gipson Mechanical. The in-line EDS system has been fully operational since Dec. 15, 2010.
