The runway project that began on August 7th is now complete. The asphalt at the intersection of the airport’s two runways was replaced, with the final stages of work happening yesterday, right on schedule. The work was necessary to maintain the integrity of this high-traffic area and to ensure its long term safety and reliability.

“We would like to thank our passengers and visitors for their patience and understanding during this time,” says Tom Ruth, Halifax International Airport Authority President & CEO. “We also appreciate the diligent work of all our contractors and HIAA staff members, the full cooperation of airlines and all the participating members of the Halifax Stanfield community.”

The construction schedule was chosen following extensive weather research and analysis. While the timing of the work was planned during a time when the lowest risk of weather impacts existed, unusual weather conditions did appear briefly in the morning hours on a couple of occasions during the project, which resulted in airlines adjusting their flight schedules.

The airfield has gone under extensive restoration in the last several years, including repaving of both runways and all taxiways, upgrades to the apron area and de-icing pads as well as the extension of the main runway (05/23), which was completed in November, 2012.

This is the final phase in the currently scheduled airfield work.
