Work on the longer runway, RWY 3 (15/33), has come to an end at Chopin Airport, with traffic returning to normal.

The repair started on 22 April and was originally scheduled to last until 2 September. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, e.g. heavy rain at the end of May and beginning of June, works progressed very quickly and were completed ahead of schedule.

The scope of works included replacing the concrete pavement of runway thresholds with asphalt concrete, which is easier to maintain, among other advantages. New wearing course has been applied on all repaired sections of the runway and taxiways; an improved water drainage has also been achieved. The construction of a new S2 rapid exit taxiway, A8 taxiway and PPS12 apron is still underway and is expected to be completed until the end of autumn.

The last major work on the longer runway took place nearly 30 years ago. It has remained operational thanks to ad hoc, partial resurfacing works carried out by the airport maintenance service every September. These will no longer be necessary for the next 10 years.
