Toronto Pearson terminal upgrade

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) has announced a C$1.5 billion investment to modernise Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 as part of its long-term Pearson LIFT transformation programme.

The terminal revitalisation programme is designed to renew ageing infrastructure while improving passenger flow, operational resilience and the overall travel experience at Canada’s busiest airport. Construction will be delivered in phases to ensure the airport continues operating safely and efficiently while minimising disruption for passengers and airline partners.

The investment follows the launch of Pearson LIFT, the airport’s long-term strategy to modernise its facilities and prepare for future passenger growth.

Terminal upgrades to improve passenger journey

The programme will deliver expanded terminal spaces, upgraded passenger processing areas and improvements to customs and immigration facilities to create a more seamless journey through the airport.

Additional enhancements include refreshed passenger lounges, expanded charging facilities, improved baggage processing systems, modernised check-in areas and advanced security screening technology. Together, these improvements are intended to reduce congestion, strengthen operational performance and provide a more comfortable airport environment.

Deborah Flint, President and Chief Executive Officer of Toronto Pearson, said: “Toronto Pearson, one of Canada’s most important national infrastructure assets, serves as a vital gateway connecting people, products, and businesses to the world.

“This investment marks another significant milestone in Pearson LIFT and demonstrates our momentum in modernising Pearson that will meet customer expectations. We’re elevating the travel experience so Toronto Pearson can continue its part in fueling Canada’s economy by welcoming more passenger growth and offering better customer experience.”

The terminal redevelopment represents the second major investment announced under the Pearson LIFT programme. Earlier this year, the airport began work on a separate C$3 billion project focused on upgrading airside infrastructure and baggage systems.

Airport officials said the combined investments will strengthen Toronto Pearson’s long-term capacity while supporting more efficient operations and an improved experience for millions of passengers travelling through the airport each year.
