Manchester Airport (MAN) is supporting a new breast cancer awareness campaign this summer, using its digital advertising network to encourage passengers to regularly check for signs of the disease while travelling.

The Check In & Check Yourself campaign, led by Prevent Breast Cancer and BooBee, will run across digital screens throughout the airport from 20 July until 7 September, targeting millions of passengers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The initiative aims to encourage women to make breast checks part of their holiday routine, with campaign organisers highlighting research showing that many women only notice symptoms when they step away from the pressures of everyday life.

Summer travel campaign promotes early breast cancer detection

According to the campaign, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the UK, with almost 60,000 new cases recorded each year. Research by Breast Cancer Now and YouGov also found that 45% of UK women do not check their breasts regularly, while more than one in ten have never carried out a self-check.

The campaign shares the experiences of several women who first discovered symptoms while on holiday, including Kath Pryer, who found a lump during a trip to the Caribbean in 2023.

She said: “I don’t think I would have found it otherwise. What I’d say to women travelling on their holidays this summer is: check thoroughly, check regularly and if you do find something you’re not happy with, don’t put it off – see somebody.”

After returning to the UK, Pryer was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy before later receiving the all-clear.

Margo Cornish, Patron of the BooBee Campaign and Prevent Breast Cancer, said: “Going on holiday can actually be a great opportunity for women to take care of their bodies and potentially catch any signs of breast cancer early.”

She added that the airport’s digital advertising screens provide a timely reminder for travellers as they prepare to leave for their holidays.

As part of the initiative, a BooBee information bus will be located outside Terminal 2 on 22 July, where passengers can receive information about breast cancer symptoms, learn how to carry out regular self-checks and understand when to seek medical advice.

Nikki Barraclough, Chief Executive of Prevent Breast Cancer, said: “Early diagnosis is key, which is why it’s so important that women take time to check their breasts regularly and see a doctor straight away if they notice anything different.”
